Encounter Anecdote
We thought it was a person standing between the trees—tall, dark, still as a statue. Then it blinked sideways and the leaves rustled without wind. The “person” lowered its head and charged, claws flashing like knives, and the undergrowth exploded toward us faster than any bird has a right to move. The guide didn’t shout “run”—he shouted “climb.”

Physical Description
The southern cassowary stands up to six feet tall, with glossy black plumage like a heavy cloak and a vivid blue-and-red throat that looks almost painted. A bony casque—like a helmet or wedge—crowns its head, and its legs are thick with muscle. Each foot bears a long, sickle-shaped inner claw capable of opening flesh like a hooked knife. In the brush, it moves almost silently, appearing and disappearing between ferns like a shadow.
Overview
Often called the most dangerous bird in the world, the cassowary is a paradox: shy and reclusive, yet capable of sudden, shocking violence. It does not hunt people—but it defends territory and food sources with explosive charges and slashing kicks that can disembowel a predator. In dense jungle, its speed and agility far exceed that of most humans.
In play, cassowaries create kinetic, chaotic encounters. They don’t stand and fight; they burst from cover, strike, and vanish into foliage. Players must think vertically (trees, rocks, vehicles) or create space quickly. As a foundational natural creature, the cassowary shows how unfamiliar wildlife can feel as alien and deadly as any monster—especially where visibility is low and escape routes are few.
Encounter Frequency and Usage
Uncommon globally, Common within its habitat.
Use cassowaries to add tension to jungle travel, escort missions, or wilderness exploration. A startled bird can trigger a chase scene, scatter a camp, or force the party into difficult terrain. In Altered Dimensions, displaced individuals may appear in parks, greenhouses, or city outskirts, turning mundane locations into sudden hazard zones. Often best treated as a problem to avoid rather than defeat.
