Leshy

Also known as: Lesovik, Wood Lord, Forest Grandfather, The Green Man of the Pines

Encounter Anecdote
The Compendium Agents followed the missing hiker’s footprints for nearly a kilometer before realizing the trail had looped back on itself three times. Birds had gone silent. Trees leaned inward where no wind blew. Then a tall figure stepped from between two trunks that had not been close together before, smiling with too many teeth and asking, politely, why they were trespassing.

Physical Description
A leshy most often appears as a tall, broad-shouldered man with bark-textured skin, moss in place of hair, and eyes like dark knots in wood. Its proportions subtly distort—arms too long, joints bending just slightly wrong—and its height fluctuates from smaller than a child to taller than the surrounding trees. When angered or revealed, twigs protrude like antlers and its voice creaks like bending timber. Tracks near it often resemble cloven or backward-turned footprints.

Overview
The leshy is a supernatural forest spirit tied to a specific stretch of woodland, acting as both custodian and predator within its domain. Highly intelligent and deeply territorial, it delights in confusing travelers, leading them astray, or bargaining for trespasses. Rather than attacking outright, it manipulates the environment—shifting paths, stirring animals, or reshaping the forest’s layout—to exhaust or isolate targets. In low- or no-magic settings, a leshy may be interpreted as an anomalous humanoid cryptid or a localized spatial distortion phenomenon that “rearranges” terrain.

Encounter Frequency and Usage
Encounters occur in deep forests, especially where paths vanish or sound behaves strangely. A leshy may stalk intruders for hours before revealing itself, sometimes offering guidance in exchange for offerings or respect. It serves well as a morally ambiguous guardian, recurring rival, or uneasy ally. In Altered Dimensions campaigns, leshy may manifest where wilderness areas overlap unstable boundaries, functioning as territorial entities attempting to “correct” ecological disruption. Individual specimens are uncommon and often treated as previously unencountered until multiple disappearances force investigation.
