Physical Description

Hyenas are powerfully built carnivores with sloped backs, massive jaws, and thick necks. The spotted hyena—the most commonly depicted—has mottled tan-and-black fur and rounded ears. Though often mistaken for dogs, hyenas belong to their own distinct family.

Their forequarters are heavily muscled, enabling bone-crushing bites capable of splintering femurs. Their vocalizations range from low whoops to the famous “laugh,” a high, rapid call associated with excitement or tension.

Eyes shine brightly at night, reflecting torchlight or moonlight from the grass.

Overview

Hyenas are both hunters and scavengers. While popular culture often exaggerates their cowardice, real hyenas are bold, intelligent predators capable of taking down large prey through teamwork and endurance.

Key behaviors include:

  • Coordinated Pack Tactics: Surrounding prey and attacking from multiple angles.

  • Persistence Hunting: Wearing down exhausted targets.

  • Bone Consumption: Little waste—camps left unattended may lose even scraps and remains.

  • Opportunistic Boldness: Testing defenses of settlements or camps, especially at night.

A single hyena will typically avoid direct confrontation with armed groups. A clan emboldened by hunger may circle just beyond firelight, probing for weakness.

Encounter Frequency and Usage

Common in appropriate African or savanna-inspired settings.

Use hyenas to:

  • Compete with players for a kill.

  • Harass nighttime camps.

  • Signal the presence of larger predators (hyenas often follow lions or other hunters).

  • Create tense standoffs in open grasslands.

They are most dangerous when the party is wounded, exhausted, or guarding something valuable.

Design Note

The hyena fills the “opportunistic social predator” niche. Rarely suicidal, often calculating, and dangerous when coordinated, hyenas create tension not through brute force but through patience, numbers, and timing.
