Honey Badger

Also known as: Ratel, Hivebreaker, Black-Back, Grave-Digger, Don’t-Care

Encounter Anecdote

We thought it was a loose dog raiding the supply crates. Then it bit through a steel snare, tore open a ration box, and chased two grown men up a truck bed without slowing down. Ajay shot at the ground to scare it. It charged the muzzle flash.

Physical Description
A honey badger is squat and muscular, about the size of a small dog, with coarse black fur and a broad white-gray mantle across its back like a hooded cloak. Its claws are long and shovel-like, built for ripping open earth—or anything else in the way. The face is blunt, scarred, and perpetually scowling. When threatened, it hunches low, hackles raised, hissing like a broken valve before launching itself forward with shocking speed.

Overview
Small doesn’t mean safe. Honey badgers are infamous for their toughness, pain tolerance, and absolute refusal to back down. They raid beehives, snake nests, traps, and camps with equal enthusiasm, shrugging off stings, bites, and blows that would send most animals running. Their loose, thick skin lets them twist around inside a predator’s grip to bite back.

In play, a honey badger isn’t a straight combat threat—it’s a chaos engine. It chews through packs, digs under fences, sets off traps, steals food, and attacks anything that corners it. Parties expecting an easy “pest removal” quickly discover a stubborn, screeching ball of claws that won’t retreat. It complicates scenes rather than dominating them, turning calm moments into noisy, resource-draining messes.

Encounter Frequency and Usage
Common in appropriate habitats.
Use honey badgers to disrupt camps, sabotage supplies, or create slapstick-but-dangerous encounters. Great for nighttime raids, prison breaks (it tunnels under walls), or accidental chain reactions—toppled lanterns, released livestock, sprung traps. In Altered Dimensions, displaced individuals often appear in warehouses or labs, where their digging and chewing can cause expensive or hazardous failures.
