Strigoi

Alternate Names: Restless Dead, Night Drinker, Grave Stalker

A village caretaker reported that the livestock had grown increasingly agitated at night, refusing to enter the eastern pasture near the old cemetery. When Agents investigated, they found fresh soil disturbed around a recently filled grave. Footprints led away from the burial site and ended abruptly near a farmhouse window. The occupants complained of recurring nightmares and unexplained weakness over the previous week. The following night, a pale figure was seen returning to the graveyard shortly before dawn, moving stiffly but with unsettling purpose.

Compendium Taxonomy

Power Source

Supernatural — Undeath; Spiritual Persistence

The strigoi is believed to arise when a deceased individual fails to transition fully into death. Folkloric explanations attribute this state to curses, improper burial rites, or lingering malevolent intent. The resulting entity sustains itself by draining vitality—often symbolized as blood—from the living.

In more naturalistic interpretations, the phenomenon may be understood as a supernatural parasitic condition or a spiritual echo anchored to a preserved corpse.

Intelligence Level

Moderate Intelligence — Human-Derived Cognition

Strigoi retain much of the memory and cunning of the individual they once were. They recognize familiar locations and may target former acquaintances or relatives. Their reasoning ability varies, but most demonstrate planning behavior such as selecting vulnerable victims or avoiding heavily populated areas.

Despite this intelligence, their motivations are often driven by instinctual hunger.

Biome / Habitat

Rural Settlements; Cemeteries; Abandoned Structures

Strigoi most frequently appear in isolated communities where burial practices place the dead within reach of the living. Graveyards, mausoleums, and neglected burial sites serve as resting places during daylight hours. They often hunt within a limited radius around these locations.

They avoid well-lit areas and rarely travel far from their burial site unless forced.

Origin

Manifested — Cursed Dead

Romanian folklore describes several causes for a person becoming a strigoi, including dying without proper rites, living a life marked by wrongdoing, or being born under certain ominous circumstances. In the Altered Dimensions framework, strigoi may represent undead entities displaced from realities where such transformations are common.

In some cases, the transition appears to occur after burial, suggesting a postmortem transformation.

Threat Scale

Tier 3 – Moderate (Predatory Undead)

A single strigoi can destabilize a small community through repeated nocturnal attacks. Victims often experience progressive weakness or illness after multiple encounters. While individually dangerous, strigoi rarely operate in groups and tend to maintain a limited hunting territory.

Threat levels increase significantly if multiple strigoi appear within the same region.

Physical Form

Humanoid — Undead (Corporeal Revenant)

A strigoi resembles a human corpse animated by unnatural forces. Its body remains physically present and can interact with the environment, though signs of decay may vary depending on how long it has existed.

The creature often appears slightly swollen or unnaturally preserved, a detail frequently noted in folklore accounts.

Behavioral Disposition

Predatory — Nocturnal Hunter

Strigoi emerge primarily at night, seeking living victims from whom they draw vitality. They may enter homes silently or attack individuals traveling alone after dark. During daylight hours they typically return to their grave or hidden resting place.

When confronted, they may attempt to flee if outnumbered.

Social Structure

Solitary — Isolated Predator

Strigoi generally operate alone and maintain a personal hunting territory centered around their burial location. While folklore occasionally describes entire families returning as strigoi, such events are rare and usually tied to extraordinary circumstances.

Environmental Interaction

Creates Hazards — Disease-Like Drain

Victims attacked repeatedly may develop weakness, anemia-like symptoms, and psychological distress. Communities experiencing repeated attacks often suffer widespread fear and social disruption.

Alters Terrain — Grave Disturbance

The creature’s need to return to its burial site results in disturbed soil, damaged coffins, and other signs of repeated grave activity.

Physical Description

A strigoi typically resembles a recently deceased human, though its appearance may differ from the expected state of decay. Instead of decomposing normally, the body often appears bloated, ruddy, or strangely well-preserved.

The skin may take on a pale or grayish hue, while the eyes appear dull but alert. Teeth and fingernails sometimes appear elongated due to the shrinking of surrounding tissue after death.

Movement is generally stiff but purposeful. While capable of surprising bursts of speed during attacks, strigoi often walk slowly and deliberately, particularly when returning to their graves before sunrise.

Clothing usually consists of burial garments or whatever attire the individual was interred with, though these may become torn or stained through repeated movement.

Encounter Frequency and Usage Notes

Uncommon

Strigoi encounters are most likely in rural or historically isolated communities with traditional burial practices. Their presence is often preceded by a pattern of unexplained illness, nightmares, or livestock disturbances.

In game scenarios, a strigoi encounter often begins as an investigation rather than a direct battle. Agents may track patterns of nocturnal activity, examine disturbed graves, or identify the creature’s original identity before confronting it. Traditional folklore solutions—such as locating the burial site and neutralizing the corpse—can provide investigative objectives and moral dilemmas, especially if the strigoi was once a known member of the community.
