Encounter Anecdote
The burial mound had not been disturbed, yet the snow around it was trampled from the inside out. When the Compendium Agents opened the chamber, the corpse sat upright, eyes burning like banked coals, one hand still wrapped around the sword it had been buried with—waiting, as it always had.

Physical Description
A draugr appears as a preserved but unmistakably dead humanoid, its flesh darkened, bloated, or frost-stiffened depending on its environment. Its eyes glow faintly, often blue or ember-red, and its body radiates a palpable cold. Despite its corpse-like state, it moves with deliberate strength, clad in burial armor or grave-wrappings and frequently armed with weapons interred alongside it.
Overview
The draugr is an undead being sustained by will, curse, or unfinished obligation rather than necromantic animation alone. Classified as supernatural, it retains intelligence and memory from life, often twisted toward obsession—guarding treasure, territory, or honor. Its presence suppresses warmth, morale, and vitality, reinforcing its role as a boundary between the living world and the dead. In non-magical settings, the draugr may be interpreted as an anomalous revenant or psychologically destabilizing phenomenon anchored to a specific location.
Encounter Frequency and Usage
Draugr are encountered almost exclusively near their burial sites, appearing when tombs are disturbed or ancient boundaries are crossed. They make excellent guardians, recurring foes, or manifestations of ancestral curses. In Altered Dimensions play, draugr may be extradimensional echoes of heroic dead, bound to locations that now exist outside their original cultural context. Some may be previously unencountered, their legends lost while their watch continues.
